근대 올림픽 경기가 과거에서 영감을 받았다고 할지라도, 근대 올림픽 경기는 또한 상당히 다른 면이 있다. 고대 올림픽 경기와 비교해보면, 근대 경기의 매회 개최지는 각각 다른 도시와 국가에서 열리는 것이 원칙으로 되어있다. 고대에는 경기가 처음에 하루에 다 치루어지고, 최종적으로는 5일간 경기를 하였다. 현재는 공식적인 경기기간이 16일 이내로 하게 되어 있다. 고대 올림픽 경기는 그리스 시민들의 영역이었는데 반하여 근대 경기는 모든 이에게 공개되어 있다. 1896년 아테네 경기에서는 14개국에서 245명이 참가하였는데 1912년에 스톡홀름(스웨덴)에서 열린 경기에서는 최초로 5개 대륙으로부터 국가 대표단이 참석하여 명예를 드높였다. 올림픽 경기의 보편성이 확실해진 것이다.
