치료사는 의사소통을 사정하고 향상시키기 위해 참고기준으로 이용될 수 있는 자폐증의 발달모델을 구성해야한다. 발달후기때는 다른 사람의 주의를 자신에게 끌어오고 다른 사람의 주의를 사물이나 사상으로 향하게 하는 일반적인 기능들이 각기 다른 순서로 나타난다. 정상아동 및 다른 언어장애아동에게는 의도적인 의사소통의 초기 발달에서 광범위한 의사소통적 기능들이 관찰된다. 자폐증에서 관찰되는 특정 형태는 사회-인지 장애의 특성과 관련해서 이해될 수 있다. 즉 사회적 형태의 의사소통은 획득하기 더욱 어려운데 그 이유는 최종 목적이 사회적으로 공유하는 것이기 때문이다. 반면에 행동을 조정하는 것을 목표로 삼고있는 보다 덜한 사회적 형태(예, 요구하기, 저항하기)는 보다 쉽게 획득된다.
언어중재에서는 전체적인 형태들이 제공할 수 있는 기능들은 인정하면서 전체적인 형태를 분류하고 단순화시켜서 사람들이 언어기호를 여러 조각으로 나누도록 도와주어야 한다. 자폐증의 발달모델에 관한 가설을 정당화시키고 여러 영역들의 발달과정 및 이러한 영역들끼리의 상호관련성에 대해 새로운 가설을 유도해내기 …(생략)
